Hours worked calculation
Calculate your hours for the week
As set in your contract or collective agreement. For example, 40 full-time or 20 half-time.
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is taken to end the next day.

Indicative result, not legal advice and not a workday record. Spanish law sets a maximum ordinary working week of 40 hours of effective work averaged over the year (art. 34.1 ET); your collective agreement may set a different distribution.

How to calculate hours worked
Hours worked in a day = end time − start time − breaks that don't count as working time. For example, 8:00 to 17:00 with a one-hour lunch break is 8 hours.
For the week, add up each day. For the month, add up every day of the month or, if you have a typical week, multiply the weekly total by 4.33 for an estimate.

Do breaks count as hours worked?
It depends. When a continuous working day exceeds six hours, Spanish law requires a break of at least 15 minutes, and that break only counts as effective working time if the collective agreement or contract says so (art. 34.4 ET). If it counts as work in your case, don't subtract it in the calculator.
Overtime: what the law says
Overtime hours are those worked above the maximum ordinary working time (art. 35.1 ET). As a general rule they cannot exceed 80 per year (art. 35.2 ET), and they are paid or compensated with paid rest as agreed in the collective agreement or contract; with no agreement, they are compensated with rest within the following four months. This calculator only shows how many hours you worked above what was agreed: whether they are overtime depends on your collective agreement.
Tracking and recording hours worked in a company
For a company, calculating hours is not enough: art. 34.9 of the Workers' Statute requires a daily workday record with the start and end time of each employee, kept for four years and available to employees, their representatives and the Labour Inspectorate.
In addition, for computing overtime, each employee's working day is recorded day by day and totalled over the payroll period, with a copy of the summary given to the employee (art. 35.5 ET).
You can do it with a paper or Excel template, or with a time-tracking system that records hours as people clock in. With Ficha.Work, the app adds up the hours for each day, week and month and generates the monthly PDF and Excel report.

How do I calculate hours worked in a day?+
Subtract the start time from the end time and deduct breaks that don't count as working time. 9:00 to 18:00 with a 60-minute break is 8 hours.
How do I calculate hours worked in a month?+
Add up the hours of every day in the month. If you have a typical week, multiply the weekly total by 4.33 (52 weeks ÷ 12 months) for an estimate; the exact figure depends on that month's working days and public holidays.
Do breaks count as hours worked?+
Only if your collective agreement or contract says so. Spanish law requires a break of at least 15 minutes when a continuous working day exceeds six hours, and treats it as effective working time only when agreed (art. 34.4 ET).
How many overtime hours can be worked per year?+
As a general rule, no more than 80 per year (art. 35.2 ET). If your annual working time is lower than the company's general working time, the maximum is reduced proportionally, and overtime compensated with rest within the following four months is not counted.
What if I have a part-time contract?+
Part-time employees cannot work overtime, except to prevent or repair accidents and other extraordinary and urgent damage (art. 35.3 ET). Hours above the agreed ones fall under the complementary-hours regime (art. 12.5 ET), and the working day is recorded day by day and totalled monthly (art. 12.4.c ET).
Does the calculator store my data?+
No. The calculation runs in your browser; we don't send or store anything you enter.
Is this calculation legally valid?+
It is an indicative tool, not a workday record. The record must be kept by the company (art. 34.9 ET). For specific questions, check your collective agreement, ask the workers' legal representatives or a professional.
